Dr Phil
The Dr Phil show has been making headlines and breaking records since its September 2002 launch. Phil's show garnered the highest ratings of any new syndicated show since the launch of Oprah16 years prior. This was quite an accomplishment for Dr Phil.
In 2003 Dr Phil noticed that America was severely over weight. So Phil entered the weight-loss business. The Doctor began selling shakes, energy bars, and supplements. Dr Phil’s products are called “Shape Up”. On his products the Doctor states: "These products contain scientifically researched levels of ingredients that can help you change your behavior to take control of your weight."
Dr Phil was immediately criticized by various groups. They accused the doctor (a clinical psychologist, and not a physician) of lacking the expertise to recommend weight-loss products. Phil was facing an investigation into “Shape Up's” claims. With all the pressure the Doctor was forced to pull his supplements off the market in March 2004.
Several people who used Dr Phil’s products filed a lawsuit against him. They claimed that although the Doctor’s supplements cost $120 per month they did not stimulate weight loss. Doctor Phil settled the suit in September 2006 for $10.5 million. Click here for more information on Phil’s lawsuit:
